Grade Level: 2nd
Objective: Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area. Define homophones. Students will be able to work in small groups.
Learner Outcome: By the end of the lesson, the student will recognize the specific homophones we discussed. The Student will be able to recognize 50 words that are homophones in 2nd grade appropriate text. The student will be able to identify measurable objectives from a list of 30 words for 2nd grade level vocabulary. The student will complete the complete lesson in 5 days having full knowledge and understanding of homophones. Upon conclusion of the lesson the student will be able to answer questions on a teacher made test of the identification of the homophones.
Homophone Song
- Introduce the word homophone to the students. Explain what it means and give examples of homophones. Play the song, “Between the Lions” homophone song several times to the students. Ask the students by a raise of hands what homophones do they hear, record them on the chalkboard. After identifying the homophones in the song, discuss the meaning and spelling of these words.
- Divide the students in groups of 4, have each group think of two sentences for each of their homophones assigned on an index card. Example: MEAT and MEET.
- Each group then shares with the class their unique sentences.
ELL/LEP population: will be able to comprehend/understand the meaning of homophones and recognize them and use the words properly in a sentence.
I love this! It is a cute fun way for students to learn and remember Homophones. I may use this one day!
ReplyDeleteWe love Between the Lions in our home. They have such great jingles and songs to incorporate. I like the diversity of teaching strategies in this approach: cooperative learning and direct instruction ~ all in one!
